Stepping Out in Faith
January 7, 2016
Over the next couple of months, we are going to be exploring the matter of faith.
As Christians we know the importance of faith. Faith brought us into the family of God and faith held us during times of trial. When we were young, stories of faith assured us and later, stories of faith inspired us.
But believing in faith because of things in our past and standing on faith during uncertainty in our present can be quite different. And faith for our future? – different again. Because in truth, the situations that cause us to need faith, make us uncomfortable. Rather than faith, we would like God to give us unmistakable evidence that the road on which we walk, will have all dangers removed.
But faith doesn’t operate in the realm of the safe, certain, or known. In a recent article a writer concluded that due to its behavior, the star of Bethlehem was a comet. This finding re- assured his faith because God’s ‘star’ fell into something that could be explained. While I am grateful that this bolstered his man’s belief, I am disturbed by the underlying proposition that God is to be trusted only IF He fits our paradigm. Could it be that the star was a comet? - perhaps but I am quite at rest believing that the God who created the universe was quite capable of creating a star that would do His bidding to announce the most miraculous event the world has ever known.
For “Without faith it is impossible to please God, for he that comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of them who diligently seek Him”. May the year ahead be one that we walk in courageous faith, trusting in God who promised to never leave us or forsake us.
