Fall 2017 Sermon Series
Beginning in September, we will be spending time in the book of John looking at the 7 sign miracles performed by Jesus. The series is called, Stretched by the Miraculous.
In some ways, the idea of the miraculous gives us trouble. We either camp in the belief that God did the miraculous years ago and since that time, His miracle working hand has gone still. We are quite content to treat the miracles as exciting in the stories they tell but as far as our life? - far removed. As a result, these miraculous acts of Jesus are used as accounts to give direction to life and principles for life rather than any discovery that Christ wants to bring His transforming presence and power into my life right now.
On the other hand, there are those who have us believe that it is always God’s intention to do the miraculous and that we thwart what He wants to do due to our lack of faith. That we just have to ‘name it and claim it’ and then the heavens will open at our beck and call. Those who hold this view, often forget that Jesus said on more than one occasion that, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it.”
Those to whom He spoke forgot that God is sovereign and does not answer to man but that He works His will, according to His good pleasure.
So, what are we to believe and where we have we gone on our spiritual journey that has brought us to a place where we “hold a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof?”
Is it possible that however God chooses to act in His sovereignty, that He wants to bring us back to a faith that is stretched by the miraculous?
We welcome you to set aside any expressions of your faith that have devolved into more mind than heart and allow God to transform you with a heart that is receptive to His power as He works His will according to “the praise of his glorious grace”.
